Focal Dystonia

My playing was hindered for 14 years by the repetitive stress disorder called focal dystonia. My symptoms were relieved by techniques learned from pedagogue and lutenist, Patrick O’Brien. For a while, I included posts on this site about my story, my recovery, and lessons with accompanying videos. I have removed them in anticipation of two articles I have submitted to the Journal of the Lute Society of America, due to be published this year (2017). JLSA plans to publish several issues devoted to the teaching of Pat O’Brien with a focus on how he helped musicians with focal dystonia and tendonitis. I am greatly looking forward to these issues and will post information here when they are published.

UPDATE, Jan 5, 2018: The first JLSA issue (J48, 2015) with transcripts of O’Brien lessons should be out in January. The second issue (J49, 2016) is due in the Spring. The final issue (J50, 2017) which will include my articles is due this summer.
